Front of house is the lighting the audience lives in: getting to a seat, reading a programme, and being brought gently down to darkness as the show starts.

It has to be comfortable, dimmable to nothing, and safe at every level — and it has to be controlled from the same desk as the stage, so the transition into a performance is one action rather than three.
What it includes
- House lighting across the seating, dimmable smoothly to zero.
- Aisle, step and row lighting that stays on when the house is down.
- Foyer and circulation lighting, linked to the performance state.
- Emergency and escape lighting, coordinated with the building's requirements.
- Working light for get-ins, cleaning and rehearsal.
Control
House states are programmed as presets — pre-show, half, out, interval, cleaning — available both at the control desk and at a simple panel for staff.
Comfort matters
Glare into sightlines, flicker on camera and colour temperature are all decided here. Where a hall is recorded or streamed, the house lighting is specified with the cameras in mind.
