A home theatre asks for two things at once: the room has to sound like a cinema, and the rest of the house has to be able to ignore it.

Cinema mixes carry real low-frequency energy, and low frequencies are what travel through a building. That is a structural problem, not a furnishing one — which is why the isolation is designed before any decision about seating, screens or finishes.

The structure

  • Floated floor — the room’s floor on isolators, so bass does not travel through the slab to rooms below.
  • Isolated walls and ceiling — an inner leaf clear of the house structure, with mass and cavity set by the level inside.
  • Acoustic door — a sealed assembly; a standard door undoes the rest of the build.
  • Quiet ventilation — attenuated supply and return, so the room can be sealed and still comfortable.

The room inside

Once it is isolated, the room is tuned: absorption at the first reflection points, diffusion at the rear, and trapping in the corners where low frequencies collect. Seating positions, screen size and speaker placement are set geometrically against the room, not fitted in afterwards.

Working with the interior

Treatment is built into the design — behind fabric, inside joinery, within the ceiling detail — so the room reads as a room rather than a set of panels. We work with your architect or interior designer, or take the whole fit-out on one contract.
