Anechoic and echo chambers

A test chamber is judged by what it does not contribute: no reflections, no background noise, no structural path from the building around it.

Anechoic and reverberation chambers are measuring instruments. An anechoic room removes reflections so a source can be measured on its own; a reverberation chamber does the opposite, diffusing sound evenly so absorption and power can be measured. Both need isolation from the building before either is meaningful.

What the build involves

  • A fully isolated shell, structurally separated and carried on isolators.
  • Wedge or deep-absorber lining for an anechoic room, sized for the lowest frequency of interest.
  • Hard, non-parallel surfaces and diffusers for a reverberation chamber.
  • Very low background noise, which usually means ventilation designed specifically for the chamber.
  • Access, cable routes and mounting points planned around the measurements to be made.

We keep a recording studio and echo chamber in house, used for testing on our own projects.
