Directional audio

Directional systems put sound in one part of a space and leave the rest of it alone — useful wherever several messages share one room.

Related

Museums, showrooms, retail, airports and transport interchanges all need audio that reaches a defined area without spilling. The techniques differ — highly directional loudspeakers, steerable columns and focused sources each have their place — and the right choice depends on the space, the content and the distance.

Where it earns its place

  • Exhibits and displays standing close together.
  • Retail zones with different messages in each area.
  • Announcements in reverberant public halls, where conventional loudspeakers become unintelligible.
  • Quiet areas that must not be reached at all.

What decides the result

Directional devices behave differently with speech and with music, and their coverage narrows with frequency. We match the device to the content and the throw distance, and verify the boundary of the zone by measurement on site rather than trusting a brochure figure.

Directivity is a property of the whole system in its room, not a number on a data sheet.
