Cinema sound

Cinema is the one venue where the target is fixed by a standard: the room has to reproduce a mix the way the mix was made.

Related

That makes the work precise rather than subjective. The screen channels, the surround array and the low-frequency system are placed and aligned to the seating, the room is treated to keep its own character out of the mix, and multiplexes need isolation between auditoria so one film does not arrive in another.

The elements

  • Screen channels behind a perforated screen, aligned to the seating.
  • Surround arrays sized and positioned for even coverage across all seats.
  • Low-frequency systems positioned against the room's modes.
  • Absorption on the side and rear walls so the room adds nothing.
  • Isolation between adjacent auditoria, and from the lobby.

Alignment

Levels, delays and response are set by measurement at the reference positions, and checked across the seating before handover.
